Overview
The Scorpion II Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMAs) from TrafFix Devices is the world's first MASH Tested, Passed, and Eligible Truck Mounted Attenuator.
TMAs are designed to protect workers and motorists from impacts with stationary or slow-moving trucks utilised in work zones and maintenance operations. The TMA is mounted to a shadow vehicle for purposes of protecting the work crew in front of the shadow vehicle and protecting the motorist that might drive into the lane closed off by the shadow vehicle.
MASH 2016 TESTING REQUIREMENTS
MASH 2016 Sections 2.2.3.1 and 2.2.3.2 defines support vehicle selection for TMA testing procedures. "During a TMA crash, the support truck is accelerated forward as the impacting vehicle is decelerated. Hence, the total velocity change during a TMA impact is strongly related to the mass of the support truck. Heavier support trucks will produce higher impacting vehicle velocity changes and require greater energy dissipation by the TMA. On the other hand, support trucks that are too light could produce high accelerations for the operator and excessive roll-ahead distance, which is the length of travel of the support truck during the impact".
TESTS 50 and 51 - Both tests should be conducted with the heaviest allowable support truck or a rigidly blocked support truck for no upper support-truck weight limit.
TEST 52 - Test should be conducted with the heaviest allowable support truck or a rigidly blocked support truck for no upper support-truck weight limit ("infinity weight)".
TEST 53 - Test should be conducted with the lightest allowable support truck.
SCORPION II TESTING
The Scorpion II TL-3 TMA was tested as per MASH 2016 requirements with the support vehicle blocked to simulate a support vehicle of very high weight or "infinite weight". By doing so required the Scorpion II TMA to dissipate 100 % of the impacting energy without the benefit of forward roll. As a result the MASH Scorpion II is the only Truck Mounted Attenuator to have been tested and passed to infinite weight.
Higher Speed/Excess Capacity TMA - The Scorpion II also successfully tested and passed the high speed UK test (UK-TD49-07) which requires an impact of 110 kph with a 1500 kg midsize car.
There are TMA's produced that will pass tests 3-50, 3-51 and 3-52 with a lighter support vehicle, but may not pass MASH impact tests with a "high weight" or blocked support vehicle.
Infinite Weight Eligible - Can be used on a host truck vehicle weight of only 6,804 kg up to infinite weight
Curved Aluminium Tube Frame - Exceptionally strong, providing protection against nuisance impacts with re-directional capacity along the entire length of the TMA.
Energy Absorbing Cushions - Moisture proof aluminium honeycomb core, enclosed by aluminium powder coated modules providing maximum durability and longevity.
Modular Design - When impacted, the Scorpion II crushes in progressive stages, which results in lower repair costs and easy parts replacement.
Open Cartridge Design - Reduces wind resistance and increases fuel efficiency in storage and transport mode.
Full Width Impact Protection - Safely protects and redirects the impacting vehicle away from the "coffin corner" area at the rear of the truck.
